A Classic Brew: Micro and Music at Ravinia

A summer night never sounded this savory. On Saturday, July 13, sip and sup with some of Chicagoland’s best brews in a craft beer tasting event.

Beer, Brats & Beethoven, first held in 2013, is an audience development initiative hosted by the Ravinia Associates Board. The mission of the Ravinia Associates is to support the Ravinia Festival by promoting awareness of Ravinia and its musical programs, encouraging audience development for classical music, and contributing to its Reach Teach Play education and access programs, which serve over 20,000 students across Chicagoland.

From Ravinia’s Lawn, enjoy South African cellist-composer Abel Selaocoe in concert with Chief Conductor Marin Alsop and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for performing his Four Spirits, which “takes the concerto format to thrillingly unprecedented places” (Bachtrack), tapping into universal experiences of ancestral wisdom, faith, and community with themes from his South African traditions.

A stormier perspective lies beyond when Alsop and the orchestra enter Ludwig van Beethoven’s realm of fate and infinite longing, his monumental Fifth Symphony, to climax the evening. At the top is the US premiere of Ukrainian composer Iryna Aleksiychuk’s Go where the wind takes you …, inspired by themes of resilience and endurance.
